My brother and me

So apparently this week was Sibling Day. It was a Hallmark event which passed me by, but really, cliched as it sounds, every day is sibling day for me. Not a day goes by where I don't think about my brother and sister in one way or another.

I could write a mile about my gorgeous little sister but recent events have meant my brother is where my head is currently at. I'm not sure when he and I stopped our daily battles of "you're adopted" (we're not, obviously, since we look like identical twins) and "you're going through that window" (actually happened, police were called, it was an incident), but overnight he became my best friend.

He's a proper tool and a poser of the highest order but I have never felt as safe as when he is around. He knows everything, knows how to do everything and has everyone permanently in stitches. Seriously, you should see family gatherings, when he walks into the room it's like Elvis is in the building, all eyes are on him and all ears are poised for his next "funny".

I used to think we'd see each other every day, I took that for granted. But I moved away, he moved away, we moved closer and then further apart. We grew up and away but whether we're a mile apart or at opposite ends of the country, whether we speak every day or once a month, I know nothing changes.

I know he's still the same guy watching wrestling with me on a Saturday morning. The same guy who doesn't think a millionth of himself as others do, the same guy who has been my hero, rock and inspiration since I was a little girl.

But then that's the beauty about siblings, even when you're 80, you can still be 10 together. Nothing is as simple, straightforward and uncomplicated as the relationship you have with your brothers and sisters (if you are as lucky as me that is).

  1. Sarah, great post about your brother. Totally true about distance and time - neither can diminish our love of family.
